The birthstone for March is Aquamarine

Aquamarine is from a family of gemstones known as the mineral beryl family. Aquamarine colours can be blue or greenish-blue. It can grow as a beautiful six-sided crystal. These crystals can be formed tiny to very large. Its name comes from “aqua,” which means water and “marine,” which means sea. Aquamarine is a very popular, very beautiful gemstone which often gets mistaken for a Blue Topaz which is very similar in colour.
Here are some interesting and fun facts regarding Aquamarine:
• Aquamarine comes from the beryl family which also includes emerald, morganite, goshenite, bixbit, heliodor and yellow beryl.
• The largest Aquamarine of gemstone quality ever mined was found in Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm (19 in) long and 42 cm (17 in) in diameter.
• England’s Queen Elizabeth received an Aquamarine as a gift from the president and people of Brazil. She had it set into a tiara.
• In ancient times, sailors used to wear amulets of aquamarine for protection at sea. The amulets were engraved with Poseidon or Neptune, which are known as the gods of the sea.
In Medieval times, it was believed to render soldiers invincible.
