The birthstone for October is Opal
Opal symbolises purity and hope and can come in many stunning colours. The more colour they possess, the more desirable they are. Australia produces around 95% of the worlds opals. The majority of this Opal is white Opal from the fields of Coober Pedy in South Australia.
Opal is a very popular gemstone, the play of colour they possess makes them a favourite amongst collectors, geologists and jewellers.
Here are some more interesting and fun facts regarding the Opal gemstone:
• In ancient Rome, Opal was known as Opalus which translates as the "precious stone."
• The stone is made from silica and water, it is believed that silica was carried down into rock crevices by heavy rains. Once the water evaporated, what was left was a silica gel that then hardened over time. It is believed to be over millions of years! It takes roughly 5 million years to solidify just one centimeter of opal.
• Opals come in many colours, these include: white, orange, yellow, red, blue, green, purple, grey, brown and black.
• Opals were Queen Victoria's favourite gemstones
• Opal is normally found near the earth’s surface in areas where ancient geothermal hot springs once flowed.
